The Second Hand Clothing That Will Make You The Most Money On eBay

With so much time on our hands, many of us have spent lockdown doing the jobs we’ve been putting off, like clearing out our wardrobes - but did you know that your unwanted items could make you a small fortune on online selling sites?

Clothes

Traffic to eBay, Gumtree, Depop and Vinted has steadily increased since lockdown began. This is good news for potential sellers, as it means there are more potential buyers for their items.

In an average month, there are 22 million searches for eBay. In April 2020, searches for eBay increased by 23%, potentially leading to an additional 5,060,000 visitors to the site in a single month.

So which items can make you the most money should you sell them on eBay? We’ve analysed the average selling prices for men’s and women’s clothing, shoes and accessories. Here are the results:

WRAP’s Clothing Behaviours During Covid-19 Lockdown Report

It was recently revealed in WRAP’s Clothing Behaviours During Covid-19 Lockdown Report that Brits had cleared out 67 million items of clothing during lockdown.

Of these items:

  • 8% have already been sold online

  • 11% will be sold online in the coming months

  • 32% have already been disposed of in general rubbish

With this in mind, we’ve calculated the total value that Brits have potentially made (and lost!) from their lockdown clearouts based on the average selling prices of clothing on eBay:

While men and women stand to make around a cool £1 billion from selling their unwanted clothing, they could be throwing almost as much away - £958,611,987 to be exact - by binning their usable clothing instead of reselling it or passing it on.

Of course, depending on what you’re selling, this total could be much higher. This figure does not include shoes and accessories which, as our research shows, have some of the highest average selling prices on eBay.

Trainers were the top money-making category for both men and women, and selling the right pairs could make you even more cash.

For example, men’s Nike Jordan trainers sell for £136.23 on average, with women’s pairs making £129.82. Selling the sought-after Yeezy trainers from Nike’s rival brand Adidas could make you even more cash, with men’s selling for £223.22 and women’s at a whopping £288.61.

If you’ve recently had a clearout, who knows - you may just have a small fortune waiting for you!

About The Data

Average selling prices for each category were found using Average Finder, a tool that finds the average selling price of items on eBay.

The averages were used to calculate the total value of clothing items should they be sold on eBay. This was based on the percentage make up of items in each clear out and the percentage of items already sold online, waiting to be sold online and thrown out, based on information in WRAP’s Clothing Behaviours During Covid-19 Lockdown.
